An essay avoids 나는; a paper goes further and makes the study the subject. 본 연구는 … 을 목적으로 한다 — this study aims to …. 본 is a formal this, the same piece you will meet in 본사 and 본인.
When a sentence has 본 연구 or 본고 as its subject, the writer is talking about their own work.
