You can say what is happening and what happened. This week you learn to reach past that — what you will do, what you can do, what you are allowed to do, what you have to do.

Six endings. They look like six things to memorise. They are not: they are two rules you already know, arriving at six places.

Rule you already haveEndings built on it
Final consonant or not-()ㄹ 거예요 · -()ㄹ 수 있어요 · -() · -()세요 · -()ㄹ까요
Bright vowel or not-아도 돼요 / -어도 돼요 · -아야 돼요 / -어야 돼요
The two rules, and what they build this week

1 · What you are going to do

Cut the . If what is left ends in a vowel, add ㄹ 거예요. If it ends in a consonant, add 을 거예요.

보다vowel볼 거예요
하다vowel할 거예요
먹다consonant먹을 거예요
읽다consonant읽을 거예요
앉다consonant앉을 거예요
Dictionary form, then the plan
내일 친구를 만날 거예요
naeil chingureul mannal geoyeyoI am going to meet a friend tomorrow만나다 ends in a vowel, so ㄹ.
저녁에 김치찌개를 먹을 거예요
jeonyeoge gimchijjigaereul meogeul geoyeyoI am going to have kimchi stew this evening먹다 ends in a consonant, so 을.

2 · The stems that already end in

A few common verbs already have as their final consonant: 살다, 만들다, 열다, 알다. You cannot add another , so the old one simply does the job.

DictionaryGoing toMeaning
살다살 거예요will live
만들다만들 거예요will make
열다열 거예요will open
알다알 거예요will know, will find out
One ㄹ is enough

3 · It also guesses

The same ending covers what you think is true. 비가 올 거예요 is "it is going to rain" — a guess, not a plan, because rain does not make plans. Korean does not split these two the way English does with will and going to; the subject tells you which one it is.
