Seven Patterns for the Middle Stretch
Comparing, planning, ordering, explaining, changing, guessing — the common core of level 3
You can make short sentences in the present and the past, and you know the describing forms. Level 3 is where Korean starts to sound like real conversation, and it rests on a handful of patterns that turn up in every listening and reading passage. Seven daily lessons, one family each: comparing (보다, 제일, 만큼, 처럼); purpose, intention and decisions (-(으)려고, -(으)려고 하다, -기로 하다, and how -(으)러 differs); the order of a day (-고 나서, -기 전에, -(으)ㄴ 후에, -는 동안, -자마자); reasons beyond -아서 and -니까 (때문에, 덕분에, -는 바람에); things done ahead, done for good, and left that way (-아/어 놓다, -아/어 버리다, -아/어 있다); change (-아/어지다, -게 되다); and reacting, guessing and checking (-겠-, -나 보다, -죠). Each pattern is taught as far as you need to use it, with the one trap learners fall into. The last day puts all seven into a single conversation, and points to the courses that take connectives and the passive further.

Week 1 · Seven patterns, one a day
- 1Bigger, the biggest, as big as, like보다 · 제일 · 만큼 · 처럼 — four ways to set two things side by sideCompare two things, pick out the most of a group, say two things are equal, and say one thing is like another.
- Why you did it, what you mean to do, what you decided-(으)려고 · -(으)려고 하다 · -기로 하다 — and how -(으)러 is differentGive the purpose of an action, say what you intend to do, report a decision or an agreement, and choose between -(으)려고 and -(으)러.
- First this, then that-고 나서 · -기 전에 · -(으)ㄴ 후에 · -는 동안 · -자마자 — one ordinary dayTell the events of a day in order: after, before, while, and as soon as.
- Bonus chapter 1Opens after lesson 3
- Because of, thanks to, and what went wrong-기 때문에 · 때문에 · -(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에 · -는 바람에Give a reason firmly with 때문에, credit a good result with 덕분에, explain an unexpected bad result with -는 바람에, and know which of them cannot take a command after.
- Done ahead, done for good, and left that way-아/어 놓다 · -아/어 두다 · -아/어 버리다 · -아/어 있다 vs -고 있다Say you did something in advance, that something is completely and finally done, and tell a lasting state from an action in progress.
- How things change, and how things turn outAdjective + -아/어지다 · -게 되다Say that something has become warmer, busier or better, and that a situation turned out a certain way.
- Bonus chapter 2Opens after lesson 6
- Guessing, reacting, checking — and all seven together-겠- · -나 보다 / -(으)ㄴ가 보다 · -지요 (죠)React to what you see or hear, make a guess from evidence, check something you both know, and hold a conversation that uses the whole week.
